Abstract
Objective: The study aims to suggest strategies supporting qualification of North Korean refugee health professionals in South Korea.

Methods: In-depth interviews are conducted to identify the difficulties faced by refugee health professionals in the process of qualification. Interviewed were 21 refugee health professionals. Qualitative analysis were made against the interview contents.

Results: Refugee health professionals face considerable difficulties in acquiring medical licenses in South Korea. Analysis of the interview revealed three main reasons: (1) hard and long procedures to obtain the qualification to take a medical licensing examination, (2) difficulty in understanding medical terminology in English, and (3) economic difficulties during the period of preparation for the examination etc.

Conclusion: Relevant laws need to be revised in terms of medical college entrance, medical licensing and medical education, taking North Korean refugee health professionals into consideration. It is suggested to prepare education and training programs customized for their abilities and skills.
